Public Health Roles in Preventing and Addressing Elder Mistreatment

As with all the Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) work, Trust for America’s Health centers public health guidance around the AFPHS 6Cs Framework for Supporting Healthy Aging. The Framework’s tenets are flexible and meant to provide guidance for public health practitioners to integrate healthy aging goals and strategies into existing work, while also providing a pathway to adopt and implement new policies and programs that support older adult health and well-being.

The AFPHS 6Cs Framework aligns well with the 10 Essential Public Health Services (ESPH), which public health practitioners use to guide their basic responsibilities. The public health sector is well-positioned to contribute to elder mistreatment prevention because of the essential capacities for assessment, policy development, and assurance (the three core functions within which the 10 ESPH fit).
